I think it's safe to say that all kids are fascinated with robots. These days we're seeing more and more of these autonomous machines in our everyday lives. We've got home robot vacuum cleaners, robotic personal assistants and even waiter bots to send food to our tables at restaurants.

These robots are all built on the imaginations (and engineering smarts) of their inventors. Somewhere in this world right now, a creative inventor is already conceptualising and designing the next robot to transform our lives. This set of printables encourages your kids to think about engineering/robotics solutions on a space craft!

Printable & Activity Objectives

💡
Age: 6 to 9 year olds, Activity Time: 1-2 hours, Items Needed: Colour pencils

In this activity, your child will learn about today's robotic technologies, the engineering design process and also design and conceptualise their own set of robots.

It will help your child or student:

  • Develop their problem solving skills by thinking about potential solutions for problems commonly found in the real world (although the task is set in a fictional spaceship).
  • Foster greater creativity and imagination through developing the solution further with the "robot" or automated element of the design challenge.
  • Learn about the "engineering design process" typically used by engineers and inventors when designing their products.

Let's start imagine-neering space robots!

Classroom Resources

Simple steps to start:

  • Research and find out more about existing robot technologies which are currently available to us. Here's a video on a household assistant robot called Astro from Amazon and the various problems it solves for home owners.

Here's a video about an indoor robotic farming system that uses less resources to produce edible plants.

Here's a video of robotic chefs preparing different delicious meals. They are truly amazing (and appetising) feats of engineering.

  • Research and find out more the "Engineering Design Process" or in other words how awesome things are made by engineeers. Here's a good and informative video about the engineering design process:
