Kids enjoy the strangest (sometimes the grossest) food combinations. It's perfectly natural for young children to want to mess around with food. Mixing up and unusual pairings of food is often just an expression of their creativity and curiosity about the world around them.

This printable food design worksheet pack is a fun and creative way for your kids to explore and experiment with weird combinations of ingredients to create new and wonderful dishes. Let's get cooking!

Printable & Activity Objectives

💡
Age: 6 to 9 year olds, Activity Time: 1-2 hours, Items Needed: Colour pencils

In this activity, your child will learn to experiment with unusual types of food ingredients to create (and design) new and appetising dishes.

It will help your child or student:

  • Develop a greater cognitive flexibility and to look at things differently from the "old ways of doing things". This skill will help them improve their problem solving skills particularly in situations where there are more than one solution.
  • Foster greater creativity and imagination through developing and conceptualising new ideas from traditionally incompatible components.

Let the weirdness begin!

How to Get Started

Simple steps to start:

  • Research and take a look at some of the weird combinations of food that people around the world are enjoying. Here's a good video featuring 30 unusual food combos!
  • Bring your activity to the kitchen and try out some of the weird food combinations. This will help provide some experiential context and open up creative possibilities for kids.

Below are a few extra ideas for your child to improve this activity:

  • Watch the video below about eating bugs and then discuss with your kids about what they feel about it. Talk about what they think is normal food and what is not normal food (Japanese sushi, chicken feet from the neighbourhood chinese restaurant etc).
