Money was invented more than 5000 years ago in the ancient civilisation of Mesopotamia which is now modern Syria, Iraq, Kuwait and Turkey. Before the introduction of a common currency, people bartered for goods and services. It wasn't until 500 to 600 BC that metal coins, mainly silver and gold, were issued.
